Nano 3G does no play songs..............

I am able to take some of my MP3 songs and manually add them to my Itunes playlist. Then I add them to my ipod nano 3g. But the songs appear on my playlist on the actual nano, but will not play. What can I do to fix this? Any ideas? Any help is appreciated.
