How to repair 8 year-old MBP Permission Repair?

My 8 year-old MBP has been a faithful companion but, recently, I've had to re-boot and run permission repair several times a week. Otherwise I get the dreaded spinning orb. Is there a way to repair this or should I simply buy a new Mac? Thanks, Thor
