Your SIM card has a PIN code that has to be typed in each time you want to use the phone to call or use the cellular network.

That PIN number came with your SIM card, usually a 4 digit code. If you have forgotten the PIN, your carrier provided you with a PUK code to override the PIN.

Once you unlocked the SIM, go to Settings/Cellular/SIM-PIN and disable the SIM-PIN feature, otherwise you'll have to type in the PIN each time you what to use the phone.
