For example, were you able to startup in Recovery mode? Did you use the Disk Utility in Recovery to try to repair the hard drive?

I Turn the MAC on whilst holding down the CMD-R button, after about a minute or so, a folder with a question mark appears.
I don't even get far as the Disk Utility.

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing. Use 2nd link if not near an Apple Store or aren’t in the US. Hardware Repair - Keeping Confidential Data Safe
