Is there a smart way to 2 MBPs (2010 15"/ 2015 15") simultaneously (processor, memory, files), i.e. docking station (when at home), remote access or file server?

What I am looking for is essentially a way to use the storage on the 2010 MBP and have it readily available wherever I am (I am a freelancer that travels). Looking around it seems that question is answered with "configure the 2010 MBP into a file server/ftp server". The other way I was thinking about was to access the 2015 MBP via remote desktop but that sounds like it would drain the performance of the 2015 say if I am in a hotel room on the road for example. The last thing I could think of was to have a VM or 2 running on the 2010, and access the VM from the 2015. I don't want to get rid of the 2010, but it seems such a waste to just let it collect dust on a shelf, my Kids are too young to make heads or tails of it, and I don't want to upgrade it to Yosemite or El Capitan. Any suggestions are most appreciated.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1), MBP 2010, i5, 4 GB RAM, 10.6.8
