Normal? No. It's impossible to say what happened. Could have been power fluctuations or a voltage spike on the circuit you have it plugged into. As for recovering the data, there are professional data recovery services, but they are expensive. You could try taking the drive out and putting it into an external enclosure to see if it's readable.
