Q: Putting downloaded movies on new Apple TV

I have a new 32GB Apple TV that is having some occasional playback issues. I was hoping to be able to put a few of my downloaded movies onto it so when the Internet isn't working I can still put a movie on for the kids. Is that possible?

NO. You cannot store personal media on any of the ATV devices. They are designed for streaming.  However, you can download movies to your local iTunes computer and then homeshare on your local network (when access to the Internet is not possible).

I used to do this all the time on my 1st generation, so not any of the ATV devices, but I get your point. What's the point of the 64GB model then? Think any apps might add this function?  My computer is usually asleep, and it won't access it for home sharing unless it's awake.

You're correct the ATV1 did have the ability to connect a drive via USB.

The the onboard storage with the ATV4 is for games and apps downloaded from the ATV App Store not for personal media...

then you have a decision to make when you want to access your media. You can stream it online (requiring an Internet connection) or you can wake your iTunes computer to stream locally when internet is not available...

The Apple TV had either a 40 or 160 GB internal drive but you couldn't connect an external drive by USB (or any type of connection for that matter).
