HHD to SSD in Macbook Pro

I'm looking to upgrade the HDD in my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 running OX X Yosemite, with the 2.6 GHZ Intel Core I7 and 8GB memory with a SSD. Does the SSD drive need to be at least equal to or larger than the HDD i'm replacing?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
