Cannot activate phone because there's not enough free space to update it

Yesterday my phone popped up with a message saying "Activation Required," but when I plug my phone into iTunes to resolve the problem, it tries to update the software, then tells me I don't have enough free space to install/update. However, it won't let me free up space through iTunes or manually because the phone isn't activated.
