external hard drive not working

I have an external hard drive, which with snow lepard worked perfectly. After installing El captain, it is not found, does not appear anywhere. I can see the light on the hard drive. I know it works. Any ideas how I can get it working, it has all my music on it!!!

Hey sickofapple12,
I understand that you aren't seeing your external hard drive that has your music. Let's see if we can get that back up for you.
If you have not done so already, see if it shows up in Disk Utility. From there you can mount and also verify the disk for any issue. Take a look at the first article below to walk you through how to verify that.
Disk Utility (El Capitan): Check a disk or volume for problems

I would also look to see if you are showing connected disks on the desktop. If you don't then your external hard drive will show up in the sidebar of Finder. More details in the second article for that.

Take it easy
