If from Apple, yeah that sounds in the ball-park. The are simply going to replace the display assembly.

You can get the part itself, used for less than half that, say from ifixit.com. But then you'll need a competent person to perform the installation, which is not altogether that simple.

It becomes a decision as to whether you want to put that amount of money into it. You may want to consider just replacing it. The same $850.00 would buy a fairly recent used or reconditioned Air.

You can buy a new Air for 850$.

They are running from 800-900$ USD. This is the only problem with Apple devices. If you need to get them fixed, they cost almost the price of the computer
