Magic Keyboard sleep on iPad Air 2

I am using the Magic Keyboard on my iPad Air 2 with iOS 9.1. Love the ergonomics of the keyboard, but the keyboard goes to sleep very quickly, after even just a few moments of inactivity. Much, much faster to sleep than other Bluetooth keyboards I've used. Results in a lot of errors when I notice only after typing two or three words that the first 2-3 letters are missing. Any suggestions, or was this keyboard designed to sleep that soon, so that if I pause in typing to read something for 45-60 seconds while composing an email or working in Word, I will need to tap the keyboard once or twice to wake it and register keystrokes again?

Same here with iPad Pro. If it's not an iOS software bug that gets fixed soon, I'll be returning this keyboard.

Every time I enter a password... first character is lost because it was re-waking the keyboard I'd beein using just 1 minute before.

Every time I hit the Home or Search shortcut, or any other keyboard command, it fails and I have to do it a second time.

Every time I type an email... first word is missing a letter and misspelled.

Terrible!

Glad to know it's not just me. It's a shame, because this Magic keyboard is much nicer than the Smart Keyboard. It even has volume and brightness keys that work on iPad, and a Pause key.

I tested with a stop watch:

The keyboard sleeps (and then misses the first SEVERAL keypresses if you type fast) at around 45 seconds. (40 seconds was fine; 46 seconds it was asleep.)

The old AA Apple Wireless Keyboard does NOT have this problem.

(Also, iOS does not recognize Fn-Delete forward-delete. Major annoyance. They changed the Fn key in some way.)

It's possible some units are defective, so I will try exchanging it. Apple DOES say the new Magic Keyboard is iPad compatible, even if mine is not: Apple Wireless Keyboard and Magic Keyboard compatibility with iOS devices - Apple Support

Same problem here. I'm scratching my head as to how a brand new Apple Magic Keyboard could have such poor functionality when used with an iPad running the latest version of iOS. Not to mention the lack of dedicated "Home" and "Sleep" keys, which most third-party Bluetooth keyboards offer. For heaven's sake, they could even have mapped the escape and eject keys, which are otherwise useless under iOS.

I like the feel of the keys, but otherwise this is astonishingly bad form from Apple.

Here's hoping they fix the quick sleep issue with a firmware update, which they could do via the Lightning port. As you rightly point out, the older Apple Wireless Keyboard doesn't drop keystrokes the way the newer Magic Keyboard does. I've solved my problem for the moment by swapping my old Apple Wireless Keyboard back in for use with my iPad, and am using the new Apple Magic Keyboard with my laptop running El Capitan. Somehow the Magic Keyboard doesn't drop any keystrokes in that configuration -- even when it's been unused and presumably asleep for several minutes -- so clearly it can be made to work.

They'll also need to fix the Fn key. You can't forward-delete on iOS! That's VITAL, and Apple should stop claiming iPad support for Magic Keyboard if such basic things don't work.

(On the old wireless keyboard, forward-delete used to work and doesn't anymore--but rather than doing nothing like the new keyboard, it goes nuts making alternate keyboards appear.)

There is at least a Home shortcut, however awkward: Cmd-Shift-H. (How about Cmd-Esc or Fn-Esc instead? Or Eject, as someone said.)

So while I am typing this right now on a magic keyboard, which is very nice to type with, unfortunately I am suffering with the same problem too, and still no sign of a fix.

Hopefully it will be possible to fix this with an IOS update, it sounds as though it is a software problem rather than the firmware in the keyboard. If not could be a big problem, because I wonder if you can update the firmware through the lightning cable?

If not it will have to go back. Very frustrating!

When I have been using this keyboard to type, particularly when making notes from an article for example where I pause for a minute and type repeatedly, I have got used to typing a letter twice, once to wake the keyboard and then again to actually type the letter. Then when I go back to an ordinary keyboard, one that actually works as it should that is Apple, I find myself typing letters twice! This is very annoying!!

An expensive keyboard sold as being compatilbe with IOS devices shouldn't be exhibiting errors like this.

Please sort it out Apple.

And yes, function backspace would be nice, I use that a lot too on other Apple devices...
