Windows 10 Boot Camp install won't let me install on BOOTCAMP partition on Mac Pro with SSD drive

Clean install of El Capitan, I have downloaded the Windows 10 x64 ISO and run Boot Camp installer. Once you get to the screen where you select a partition, the BOOTCAMP partition can't be installed on. If I format it and try again, still no luck. Anyone have experience with this problem or a workaround for this?

Thanks,

Patrick

kudos to Vizi0n, also thank everyone here, especially you Loner T. I tried to install windows 8, 8.1 and 10. All unsuccessfully. My solution was PRAM reset (cmd+option+r+p on mac boot, wait for second chime) when mac was in default state (only one partition not split !!!). Then I installed windows 8.1 as I was able to very first time. Important point was, after the PRAM reset, SSD (swap) was no longer visible in windows installer. Only disk0: 4 partitions:

EFI

Mac

Mac Recovery

OSXRESERVED with windows installer

Hopefully you've fixed this by now, but this is happening because you're loading the ISO from an external drive.

I had this issue and it drove me totally crazy, but it turns out that newer models can install windows with the ISO just loaded from the boot drive's downloads folder. In hindsight I don't know why I thought I had to be using an external HD, or something other than the boot drive, but I did.

Once I ran Bootcamp and had the ISO in my regular Downloads folder, it worked fine. Within Windows setup I had to select the BOOTCAMP partition and format it using the wizard in the setup interface (takes like 15s), but after that it finished installing and it works like a dream.

Apple should TOTALLY update the Bootcamp instructions to make it clear that you shouldn't use anything external in the process unless you have to via prompt. Would have saved me weeks of hassle and a decent chunk of money I spent on now (to be returned) El Capitan-compatible audio hardware.

Unfortunately, I don't recall now exactly what it said, but it was long the lines of it couldn't install on this partition, and to see the system log for details.

I did manage to work around this by creating a Windows 10 install DVD from the ISO image (and just manually through the Finder, as the Boot Camp Assistant no longer shows the option of creating a boot disk...thank God I still have an external DVD drive laying around). Apparently the new-fangled system which skips having to create a separate disk and uses a temporary partition was part of the problem; simply creating a FAT partition with the Disk Utility and booting with the installer DVD let me format the partition as NTFS and then install without complaint.

Not sure the audio drivers installed properly from the Windows Support files - in Windows 8, I could use the Apple keyboard to adjust the volume, but my line out does nothing in Windows 10 after this install.

I had the same problem on both a 2015 MacPro and 2015 MacBook Pro. In my situation, I tried to load Windows 10 ISO using a USB Flash Drive - each time I arrived at Format BootCamp Drive it gave ne a NTFS error. Problem was solved when I downloaded Windows 10 ISO directly into my "Download" Folder on the Mac and installed ISO directly from Download Folder e instead of USB - this worked or both the MacPro and the MacBook Pro.

OK! So I followed those instructions earlier in the day and the issue remained. However, when I did it, I still had an external drive connected. This time, with the drive disconnected, it fixed the issue. I still had to select "Format" on the BC partition within the Windows installer, but instead of receiving a second error, the installation started!

Now I'm just wondering what the SMC and NVRAM had to do with it?

Thanks Loner T!

THe PRAM reset can be done at any time, but in my case if I was doing it without the drive being 1 partition it wouldn't do a thing and the same error would come back again and again.

Making the drive 1 partition again using the bootcamp assistant then resetting the PRAM and rerunning the bootcamp assistant to partition the drive and launch the installer worked every time. It even did last week when I reinstalled Win8. I had forgotten what the "magic trick" was. I had to Google for my nickname and Bootcamp lol

I had the same errors and issue with with High Sierra and Windows 10 - I even clicked Format on the Bootcamp partition and still got no where with the "Next" button...I simply shut down

Heres what I did.

  1. Shutdown Stuck Windows Installer
  2. Boot into Mac High Sierra
  3. Open Bootcamp assistant
  4. Click Next
  5. You should see Mac partition as a whole and a Restore button. Click Restore.
  6. After it's finished repartitioning back to all Mac OS, Reopen Boot Camp assistant.
  7. Click Next and see the partition map, now adjust the partition requirements again and continue
  8. Load your ISO from your Mac and let it do it's thing...
  9. This probably didn't affect it but I'm stating it anyway,

At the time it asked for the Windows Key I clicked "I dont have a windows key" as I wanted to take a different path. Well it worked! so this probably had nothing to do with it working but just putting it out there.

  10. Choose the type of Windows you want to install (must be x64) Home or Pro doesnt matter.
  11. Choose Bootcamp partition and click Next....

(one other change I made was the ISO itself. Initially I had build (6711) and it failed to install with the error messages shown above, then I changed my ISO to a more older Windows 10 build (1607) = This one worked. I'll upgrade it to the 1709 build later.

Hope it works for you...

Depending on the error message, the NVRAM contains variables used by Bootcamp which control the installation of Windows across several reboots as needed by Windows. If these are not set, removing the storage will fix the issue, but if they are set, you will need to do both, remove the external storage and run NVRAM reset. SMC reset will rebuild the hardware database which will help with drivers installation after the base Windows installation.
