Do all four ram slots need the same size stick in iMac late 2009

I currently have 2GB x 2 Stick for a total of 4GB. I want to upgrade with an additional 8GB of Ram and want to know if I have to remove the current 4 GB or can I leave them in for a total of 12 GB

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1), late 2009

Its recommended to have matched RAM, but its not absolutely necessary. Its better to have more RAM than less but matched RAM generally.

You can use the existing one with the new one.
