Safari - the 'Back' key command has stopped working [OS X.11.1]

simple problem:

the ' cmd+[ ' shortcut for the Back command [return to the previous web page] no longer works on my system. I'm running X.11.1 on a MBAir2011. The system is otherwise in good working order and fully-updated etc etc

does anyone have a solution? It is very frustrating!

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)
