What is mDNSResponder?

I noticed via a third-party firewall application, that the mDNSResponder process had accepted an incoming connection from the name given to my Macbook Pro on the LAN - [name]'s-Macbook-Pro.local.

I was wondering:

(1) What this actually means, and

(2) Given that that name is used by others on the LAN to access your machine remotely, as long as I have all sharing options disabled I theoretically shouldn't be at risk of anyone remotely accessing my machine etc, right?

Thank you to both of you for replying to quickly, but unfortunately none of your responses actually answer my questions.

I was wondering why I would see a connection from the name of my Macbook as it appears on the LAN as if it were a separate machine.

I also know the mDNSResponder process is not malware. But given that my Macbook accepted an incoming connection from something that has the same name for my Macbook's sharing capabilities, as long as I don't have any of them enabled I theoretically should not be open to someone attempting to brute force my admin password, and for example, attempt to remote login?
