Q: How to recover when re-install is incomplete
Re-installing Yosemite on my 2011 iMac i5 16 GB has stalled midway and I want to regain keyboard control in the least harmful way. What does anyone suggest?
iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Thanks leroydouglas.
On my second search from my alternate computer a topic about Restarting when progress stalls appeared. I tried its steps, skipping the Cmd-S and command line 'fsck', and found Yosemite re-installed fully, though a few issues arose such as all my Mail.app signatures gone. That separate advice was enough to get my iMac up and running again, a re-install preparation for advancing to El Capitan (10.11.x) tonight.
BTW, my re-install of Yosemite did resolve some weirdness that had begun appearing unexpectedly, which caused me to worry an upgrade directly to El Capitan might go wrong. It's my first time going that approach to OS X upgrade, and seems to reduce chances that a fall back to a Clean Install from Time Machine comes into play.
Thanks for your assist, though Set up Assistant wasn't in use.
