How do you make space in your car trunk without removing anything?
To make space, you would ahem to remove something from your iPhone.
If your phone is running iOS 8.3 or later instead of iOS 6.1.4 indicated in your signature, and you have Settings > iCloud > Photos > iCloud Photo Library on, you may be able to reduce some of the space needed for photos by also turning on Settings > iCloud > Photos > Optimize iPhone Storage.
My phone is running iOS 9.1... and it still having that problem

Doing a backup will not free up any space on your phone.
Be aware that iCloud is primarily oriented towards sharing between devices and is not designed for freeing up space on your phone.
