i have had a message come up that says Macos has found a virus from the last website I visited.
is this glenuine software to rid the virus?
i Also have the icon of a strange face in the history on safari. I can't trace anything in applications.

Thanks, what worried me more was in the history, the website I previously visited showed the icon of a blue face with wierd expression!

the virus warning that you see is actually an advertisement which detecs the operating system. if you click and allow the adv. or install anything you will allow to install malware. dont care it dont install it. probably its mackeeper.
Without exception, all popups or messages telling you your Mac has a virus or needs 'cleaning' are scams: at best an attempt to sell you expensive, useless and difficult to remove applications, and often phishing attempts to get you to give away your password or bank details. No remote system can detect a virus, quite apart from the fact that there are none in the wild affecting Macs. Never respond in any way to this sort of thing.
Thanks for your help, I have cleared the history, reset Safari and going to check for cookies and extensions to see if there is anything there, quite alarming really!
