iOS 7.1 and itunes 12.2.2 - are they compatible?

I just updated my iPad to iOS 9.1.

My computer won't let me sync with iTunes since i am running 12.0.1.26 and need at least 12.2.2.

My question is...

I have an iPhone 4s running iOS 7.1. I decided long ago not to update the iOS since i had many friends who had their phones become useless bricks when they updated the iOS.

Can i update my iTunes to 12.2.2 and still sync my iPhone running iOS 7.1?

Thanks,

Wendy

Thank you Niel.

I thought of a couple of further questions related to this. Perhaps you or another viewer could help me.

I have an old iPhone 3G running iOS 4.2 which I use as an iPod and an iPod nano.

I am assuming from your response that all previous iOS are compatible with the current iTunes. Is it safe to assume this or are there compatibility issues with any previous iOS?

Does anyone know if there is an Apple link that explains this?

Thanks so much for your reply.
