How do I prevent paragraph breaks when converting from Pages to Word?

When I export a Pages document to Word, then submit to my professor, there are significant paragraph breaks in the document when she receives it. If I open my document from my Mac after exporting to Word, I don't see change, only the original layout. These paragraph breaks interrupt the flow of the paper/assignment. How do I prevent this from happening, so that my professors receive my papers in the layout I intended?
