Late 09 imac 27" running El Capitan I have tried startup in all modes to no avail. When I started up with external flash with El Capitan, The four options appeared from El Capitan installer. I ran Disk Utility. HDD was fine. Macintosh HD repair failed File system exit code 8. Cannot get it to boot properly, and cannot access my files to back them up. Is my HDD actually bad?

Chances are crashed HD. If you can restart in the Recovery Partition (Command + R on startup) open Disk Utility and run Repair Disk. If errors appear after 2-3 passes that has confirmed my guess. You can also run Apple Hardware Test in extended mode 2-3 times back to back. If errors appear, that only again confirms my hunch.
It will not boot in ANY mode. Just a white circle with a line through it...
Then you just confirmed a hardware problem, if it were mine I would take it to an AASP to have them professionaly diagnose it and fix it. Ask if the diagnostic fee is applied to the repair fee.
