I bought an LG ultrawide monitor that requires 2560 x1080 resolution. My iMac running OS X El Capitan does not have that kind of resolution. Is there another way of maximizing my ultrawide monitor?

That shouldn't be a problem. Your iMac supports an external resolution up to 2560 by 1600 pixels.
don't set it to mirror the imac
