Iphone 4

I have an iPhone 4s and when using the pre-installed email app, the date, showing the last time emails where checked does not appear correct.It consistently shows a date back in April 2014. Is there a way to reset the iPhone 4S or is it completely out of date now? I plan on updating the phone soon but I would like a bit more mileage out of this on because I really love the design and feel the more recent models have not come close to its design style (just my opinion).
