Q: Second login screen password won't work, disk utility said there's a problem with the partition map, and command s screen now says there's an error building a user of type

Hello all,

First time posting and first time having any major issues with my Mac. Hopefully someone can offer assistance, because I currently live in a foreign country and I'd rather not have to visit an Apple Store and be charged U.S. prices to resolve the issue(s).

I have a MacBook Pro (purchased end of 2011). I have El Capitan installed.

Last week, my Mac began running very slowly and freezing. It would also take up to 10 minutes to pass the login screen. I deleted a ton of music files and rarely used applications because I thought maybe I just needed to free up space. This didn't help at all. When I tried to run disk utility, it said it couldn't be opened. I restarted my Mac in safe mode, and then ran disk utility bandaid. I received a message saying that "problems were found with the partition map which may prevent rebooting." There was no suggestion of how to repair the issue. This happened on Wednesday.

Since Wednesday, I've left my Mac in safe mode. Each time I opened it, it would only prompt me to enter one password (the one for my admin account I'm guessing, since it has my picture). For the last year or so, it normally has made me enter the password twice. The first time is with my personalized account, and the second time it shows a blurred background and generic looking username and password field. I used my laptop twice today with no issues logging in. However, when I came home tonight, it wouldn't accept my information on the second generic looking screen.

The second screen does not offer any password assistance. I tried using the command-s prompt after the start up chime, but I get an error message that says "error building a user of type."

I then tried holding down the power button to go into recovery mode. After entering my password, I received an error message that there are no users found on this disk.

Unfortunately, I only have my 1 admin login on the Mac (after perusing the forums, I'm seeing that this is an issue). I also do not have the installation CD. I'm pretty much assuming that I'll end up having to pay the Apple Store to fix whatever is wrong...I thought I'd at least check on here before going. Thanks for any help you can provide.
