Can't run 6.1.3 update

MY iPad has not been updated in years because I have not been able to run this update. I am currently on 5.0.1. My iPad model is MC979LL. Initially I didnt have enough to space. so, I deleted a bunch of stuff and got enough storage. Now it just says it is unable to download with no explanation. I know the iPad is old, but ALL I want to do is have games on it for my kids. Currently I cannot download the ABC Mouse that I just purchased. also, I know I have a bunch of cloud stuff going on, and I don't understand any of it. All I want is for this iPad to have limited games for the kids. I don't care about cloud, storage or back up.

the first generation of ipads does not have the hardware power to run anything newer then ios 5.1.1 if you have trouble upgrading to that from the ipaditself or have a newer ipad and still have problems then connect it to a computer with iTunes and upgrade it that way.

How do I know if it is a newer or older. I would have assumed that since the update appeared in my settings, software upgrades, that it would be eligible to run that upgrade? Thanks for your help.

MC979LL describes an iPad 2.

The iPad 2 can run the current iOS (9.1).

To obtain that, use the current version of iTunes (12.3.1) on your computer. Attach the iPad to that iTunes, and get your software update that way (using the iPad's summary page in iTunes).
