Q: Can I restore from backup from Yosemite to new Macbook with el Capitan/

I have a 7 year old Macbook Pro running Yosemite.  I have bought a New Macbook with El Capitan.  Can I use restore from backup to update the new Mac or will the different OS make it not work?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.2)
