Imessage failure

Okay i have a question., me and my friend both have iphones and we are both connected to wifi but we can't imessage eachother, we can imessage everyone else in our contacts except eachother. This problem didn't occur until this afternoon. we both tried to reboot our phones and turn imessage off and back on but nothing has worked. What should we do?
