Using iPad for presentations

Does anybody know how to drive a projector by an iPad using the projector's HDMI input and yet feed a separate amp for the audio. It appears the side audio O/P is cut once the projector is connected, at least I tried driving my TV this way in order to prove it would work before I embarked on a presentation using someone else's projector.
