I am using an older 30G ipod. When I try to sync, I get an error message, "can not sync because a file is missing". What does that mean and how do I fix it.

I am using an older 30G ipod. When I try to sync, I get an error message, "can not sync because a file is missing". What does that mean and how do I fix it? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my iTunes software. No help.
