It certainly is possible, but not practical. What you are requesting would require manufacturing new parts that currently do not exist. Your best course of action is to replace the broken display.

Apples Depot service- a tiered flat-rate repair service that Apple offers in the USA. The computer is sent to a central facility (the "depot") and anything and everything that's wrong with it is fixed for one of several flat rates depending on its general condition.
The other posts are correct. You cannot do it without changing the screen resolution. A resolution of 1028x768 would shrink the sides of the screen by about 2 inches on ether side. You would have to play around with the screen resolution in system preferences/displays.
