Can't sync iPhone 6 w/iOS 9.1 to iTunes

When trying to sync my iPhone to iTunes I get the following message "The iPhone “XXXXXXXXXX's iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes." I have the current version of iTunes. I an still able to sync an iPhone 5 with no issues.

Wow, that is weird ... but (almost) exactly the same predicament I have.

I have a mid 2007 mini with Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and used it to upgrade an iPad 2 to iOS 9.1, which immediately after reported I needed a newer version of iTunes. This evening I just purchased a used iPad 3 with 9.1, and iTunes gives the same message to upgrade.

However my old iPad 3 on 9.1 still connects to iTunes just fine. But that one was upgraded over the air.
