iMovie 5.0.2 sluggish (pinwheel, skipping)

Hello - I have not used my ancient iMac G4 in a few months. Took in out and tried doing some basic editing in iMovie 5.0.2, all of which is saved to an external 1 TB drive. The system moves quickly and briskly until I try to play or edit any sort of video. Then the pinwheel comes up and iMovie freezes, then skips ahead, then freezes again. Regardless of the size of the project, iMovie is erratic. Then the program closes.

Other components of the old iMac still work fine (iTunes, iPhoto, DVD player, etc). Only iMovie seems to be sick. Any suggestions? Should I perhaps reinstall the entire operating system?

Thank you kindly

FYI - I have 149.05 GB hard drive, with 102.5 GB left.
