Problems with OS X El Capitan
After updating to OS X El Capitan, whenever I open Word 2008 the pinwheel appears and I need to force quit it. What can I do?
Have you checked with Microsoft to see if that app is still compatible with El Capitan?

After Office for Mac 2008 came Office for Mac 2011.
After Office for Mac 2011 came Office for Mac 2016.
(This ignores Office 365.)
I wouldn't be surprised if Office 2008 is no longer compatible with OS X. I believe Microsoft stopped supporting Office for Mac 2008 a while ago.
I still have Office 2008 on my computer, running El Capitan, and it's worked fine for me so far.
