How can I get my pictures from my iPhoto library into Photos in El Capitan?

I recently upgraded my iMac OS from 10.6.8 to El Capitan (10.11.1) without reading any reviews. Now I'm stuck- how can I get my pictures from my iPhoto library into Photos in El Capitan?
