font names displayed as a font example

In my old macbook, I could go to the font menu in any application and instantly see the font names displayed as a font example. Now, with my new macbook, the font menu names are all displayed in the same font. I have to open the font book and look at the examples. NOT FUN. Does anyone out there know how to set a preference so that the font names are displayed in their respective fonts? The setting is not in the font book.

I'd appreciate some help here.
