Apple usually just provides limited updates for a couple of versions previous to the current one. Unless 10.7 was originally installed on your machine or you purchased 10.7 earlier from the App Store, it is no longer available. OS X 10.11 El Capitan is the current version available in the App Store, and should work on variety of older machines - see http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/#hardware-requirements.
That may be true in general, but you can still buy 10.7 and 10.8 at this writing. The process is quite convoluted. You must be running 10.6.8 to have access to the Mac App Store.

First, you visit the Apple Online Store and use the link above to purchase a redemption code with detailed Instructions, which is delivered by email. Cost is US$20. It requires a person to fulfill it and send you the emails, so it will not be sent immediately, and probably not over the weekend.
You then take your code and enter it at the Mac App Store, and you will be qualified to download 10.7 Lion. Reports are that the procedure just adds 10.7 Lion to your "Purchases" page -- the download does not begin automatically. You have to manually go to your "Purchases" page to download or re-download.
