Audiobooks won't sync? SOLVED!

So this is more of a solution than a question.

I recently upgraded to a new iPhone and moved to iOS 9. My existing audiobooks seemed to work just fine until one day I noticed some missing artwork so I added into my iTunes and synced my phone. This wiped all of my ripped audiobooks from my phone, or so it seemed as they were still taking up valuable memory but would not show in iBooks or play when pressed in the search bar.

After hours and hours of syncing, unsyncing, deleting, installing, backing up, manually moving files etc I managed to fix the problem. It's so unbelievably simple it's a wonder no genius from Apple has made this fix available to avoid people like me following the often several year old suggestions on the forums.

Your phone will not play any audiobook item where the file name (music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Audiobooks/Author/Book/Chapter 1.mb4) has a space or special character in it. A simple command script to replace spaces with underscores will do all the hard work for you then you can import the new files into iTunes and sync with ease.

I hope this helps anyone who has been bashing their head against a wall trying to get their audiobooks to work.

Create a txt file and include the following code:

dir |

Where-Object { $_.name.Contains(" ") } |

Rename-Item -NewName { $_.name -replace " ","_" }

Save the file and change the file extension to .ps1 - right click and run with powershell. Depending on your version of Windows you may need to paste the code directly into powershell, press enter and type Y.

I don't know the solution for Mac but I'm sure now you know what to do it will be easier to find out.
