I have version 10x and want to upgrade to the latest version 12x. When I check for updates on iTunes, it tells me i have the latest version. how can i force the update to 12x?

You need to update your OS X. iTunes 12 need OS X 10.8.5 or greater.

I have tried to upgrade from OS X 10.6.8 to El Capitan on my iMac but can't figure it out. When I check for SW upgrades, it tells me I am on the latest version. When I download El Capitan from the AppStore, it is not in my downloads. Is my iMac too old to upgrade to El Capitan?

You must use the Purchase tab in the App Store because El Capitan is an upgrade rather than an update.
Backup everything prior to the upgrade.
The download for El Capitan is in your Applications folder.
update itunes when it says it already has the latest version
