cannot install windows 10 partition table discrepancy

I had windows 7 running in a bootcamp partition for over a year , no problem with MACOS Yosemite. With Microsoft offer I decided to upgrade to windows 10.

Upgrade went fine ,I then upgraded the bootcamp drivers OK. Windows10 running fine.

Then I upgraded to El Capitan, still no problem. Then, windows 10 started to give me some problem (start menu critical error) which I did not manage to fix , I decided to revert to rollback to windows7 . When the windows 7 started to boot : I got an error ApppleHFS missing or corrupt.

I figured out that it must be because I upgraded to el capitan in the meantime: so replaced AppleHFS.sys and Applemnt.sys by the windows7 versions and could boot windows7 OK. I thought I would then try a clean install of Windows10 : started bootcamp assistant, deleted windows 7 : bootcamp assistant shows only one partition which I thought was OK, then I repartitioned the MAC HD using the partition slider and chose a smaller size for the MAC OS (200GB) and a lager Bootcamp partition: 702GB

When I try to install Windows10, the partition table displayed by the windows installer is the old one! I did not try to go any further

I read some of the other posts and tried to give information which should be useful

It looks like a MBR problem but I do not understand it. Thanks for any help

the disk utility sees this partition table:

jean-luc$ diskutil list /dev/disk0

(internal, physical):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: GUID_partition_scheme *1.0 TB disk0

1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1

2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 297.3 GB disk0s2 !!

3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3

4: Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP 702.0 GB disk0s4

/dev/disk1 (external, physical):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: FDisk_partition_scheme *30.8 GB disk1

1: DOS_FAT_32 WINDOWS10 30.8 GB disk1s1

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------

I do not quite understand : the sum of the 2 main partition (MACOS + Bootcamp 297.3+ 702) is 999.3 gb!!!! where it was 930GB before

I installed gdisk and run:

Sudo disk /dev/disk0

Password:

GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 1.0.1

Warning: Devices opened with shared lock will not have their

partition table automatically reloaded!

Partition table scan:

MBR: hybrid

BSD: not present

APM: not present

GPT: present

Found valid GPT with hybrid MBR; using GPT.

You are confusing the two different methods used for size calculations.

The size of the BC partition is 1371090944 512-byte sectors. This is 701998563328 bytes.

Two different calculations provide two different numbers.

701998563328 / (1000 * 1000 * 1000 ) = 701.998 GB

701998563328 / (1024 * 1024 * 1024) = 653.787 GiB

They are both interpreting the same total bytes using two different calculations.

Please notice the disk is

1953525168 sectors, 931.5 GiB

or 999 GB.

Please continue installing W10.

Thank you again. Loner T, problem solved. Yes I went ahead and formatted the bootcamp partition and it installed OK.

One thing to mention to those who do a clean install, is that their bluetooth keyboard and mouse do not work after installing the bootcamp drivers. I was lucky to have usb ones to to to bluetooth and get the devices paired. aAso the bootcamp drivers installation stopped half way, stuck on realtek drivers. and finally, my dvd drive is not recognised. I had none of these problem when I installed windows 10 as an upgrade to windows 7.
