Correct, as the iPad doesn't have native SMS texting ability. There are Apps available at the App store that will allow you use SMS messaging.
Thank you! i have to select "allow forwarding" on my iPhone and it gave me a code to plug in. Went back to message in iPad that would not sent and zippo, it sent. Already received a reply from Android contact. Had done this sometime ago and thhink settings may have been reset after iOS upgrade. Too bad Apple doesn't put this info on web site when it talks about imessage set up!
