I have an iPad 3rd generation. I currently have an update for Vine but when I try to update I get the message the update is not compatible with my iPad. My question is how do I get rid of the update and the notification on the App Store icon?

Is your iPad up-to-date? You can't get rid of the update itself but you could turn off the notification badge in Settings>Notifications.

I wound up deleting the app. The notification continued to show on the App Store icon so I took your suggestion and went into settings and turned off the automatic downloads for both Apps and Updates. The notification disappeared. Thank you for your suggestion.
Deleting would do the trick to - and is a good option if you don't plan to use the app anymore 🙂
