Error Connecting 2wire 1800HG

Hi, can anyone help me connect my MacBook Core 2 Duo to connect to my 2Wire internet router model# 1800HG. I've tried everything from shutting off the security option which prompts me for the wep password but it still doesn't work. I don't think my wep password is wrong. Is there an incompatibility issue with the Intel Macs and my modem because my PC laptops work perfectly fine? The weird think is ethernet works but only wireless is an issue. Also, the error message that repeatedly pops up every time is "There is an error joining the airport 2wire..."

ptdo, Welcome to the discussion area!

The weird think is ethernet works but only wireless is an issue.

Ethernet isn't affected by the wireless encryption method or password.

Have you tried using WPA instead of WEP? Assuming that you are using 128 bit WEP, is your password a full 13 ASCII characters?

WPA is better wireless encryption than WEP.

It sounds like you are using a hexadecimal password and 40/64 bit WEP. 40/64 bit WEP is pretty useless and easily overcome.

You should be using 128 bit WEP at a minimum. If you use 128 bit WEP you should use a 26 digit hexadecimal (13 character ASCII) password.

It is even better if you use WPA.

I, too, am having the exact same problems. To add to the mix of attempts, I also have an iMac G5 that connects to the 2WIRE in a heart beat! My neighbor about 30 feet away also has a 2Wire DSL modem. I can connect to that modem with my Intel laptop! I get the same error message as was originally stated here when I try to connect the Intel machine to my 2Wire modem. I had concluded that the modem was bad. Now I am convinced this is an issue with the Intel machine ---- BUT why does my Intel machine connect to the neighbor's 2Wire modem????? ARGH! I haven't tried changing to WPA. That is the next thing I will do.

I have the answer!!

The answer is nothing more than changing from WEP security to WPA. It even kept the same password. I was able to connect both my Intel MacBook Pro and my iMac G5.

From reading further in the disucssions, drop out is a problem also associate with the WEP security and the WPA seems to have fixed that. I will only know about that after I have been connected a while.]

were you able to connect your MacBook Pro CORE 2 DUO notebook to your 2wire? i am having a very difficult time getting my airport to log onto my 2wire network. the fuuny thing is that i can log on to my 2wire using the ethernet cable. the other thing is that when i turn my computer on, my computer automatically logs to my neighbor's network but not mine. when i click on the airport icon, my wireless network is listed in the list but when i select it, i get an error message saying that there was an error logging on to my 2wire network.

can you help me?

NOPE.. I haven't been able to connect with my regular MacBook, not Pro. I've been using my school's internet so yea, and neighbor's. The advice from the people above is quite useless. I even contacted 2Wire, here is what they gave me. "Thank you for contacting 2Wire Customer Support. The following is intended to answer your inquiry:

If the Windows PCs are able to connect the wireless without issue and the MAC cannot even with encryption turned off it appears to be an issue with the MAC itself. There is no compatibility issues with the Intel MAC"s many customers use them wirelessly without issue. I would attempt running the airport setup assistant so see if it will give you a more specific error. Go - Applications - Utilities - Airport Setup Assistant. Other settings to check to ensure they are not possibility interfering (Apple - System Preferences - Network - Show Airport) is that TCP/IP is set to "Automatic" or "DHCP," IPV6 is turned off, PPPoE is turned off, and AppleTalk is turned off. If this does not resolve the issue please contact Apple to troubleshooting the Wireless on the Apple Computer."

Well, that's about it. I cannot do anything about it. If you find a method, post it on here; so this is pretty much it. We must suffer with the CRAPPY development of hardware compatibility.

Wow, well after spending about 12 hours ping-ponging between AT&T DSL support and Applecare, I am relieved but also discouraged to hear that this issue is not mine alone.

The completely crazy thing is that the MacBookPro HAS been wirelessly connecting to my 2Wire 1000HG via Airport perfectly for about 2 or 3 weeks since I got it.

Suddenly, yesterday afternoon, it stopped working and I'll be darned if I or anyone can get it the MBP to connect via wireless again. It connects fine if hardwired, but when I try to join the Airport/ wireless network, I'm getting the same "there was an error connecting to the network " ****"" (my network name)as others posting on here.

My friend, who had her g4 powerbook over shortly after my connection went out was able to connect to the same 1000HG no problem, so it truly does seem to lie in some incompatibility/ conflict....

the modem support people say that there's nothing wrong, and it's because of the Mac; the Mac people say it must be the modem. My MBP connected perfectly on two other wireless networks around town today...

So what is the deal??

I do have a WEP password rather than WPA, so I will now look into changing this.

Any ideas/ solutions would be welcome.

thanks,

j

god i can relate! i have spent the last 3 days talking to At&T (my IP provider) and Apple suport peoplr. i even went to the apple store to make sure to see if they could help with the 2 WIRE problem - but - nope. both of these companies play the blame game. i call AT&T back to see if they would reimburse me if went to bestbuy and bought a new router (costs about $30.00) and they said NO. Boy, we paid so much for our new computers yet it is useless when it comes to the wireless connection. i have just given up now and log on to the web via my ethernet. the geek squad people said that they can come over and set up a new router plus labor for over $160.00! i am not going to spen anymore money on this. you know, i thought Mac's were a superior computer to PCs. i am not so sure anymore 😟
