Help me upgrade from 10.6.3 to current system. My

I have an old imac 2ghz intel core 2 duo machine that I recently bought 10.6.3 for and I want to upgrade his machine as far as I can. How do I get to the next level? 10.6.3 upgraded just fine and I want to get as far as I can. Can anyone help me with this question. Do I need to buy any more software?

iMac, iOS 6.1.3

1. Run the Software Update pane of System Preferences and update it to 10.6.8.

2. After #1, open the Mac App Store and try downloading El Capitan. If you get told that it's incompatible with your computer, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.

Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.
