MacBook (Late 2008 Unibody) Slow to Boot and Shut Down with El Capitain

Hello,

I have been having trouble with my MacBook (Late 2008, Aluminum Unibody, 2.4 GHz). Ever since I've installed El Capitan, it has acquired a progress bar and I think it boots up slower. When I finally see my desktop, the spinning pinwheel pops up processing for a short minute. This has never happened before as well.

When shutting down, it also takes awhile. Here is a list of what I've done so far:

- Upgraded from 4GB of RAM to 8 GB of RAM after hearing it was compatible. It has helped the speed tremendously, but the problem persists.

- Upgraded my hard drive from 250 GB to 1TB. I was down to 10% of the memory before the transition and like the aforementioned, it has helped a bit. But still, it doesn't go away

- I've used Clean My Mac to clear out clutter. Nothing.

- I've tried using PRAM to reset the memory, still the same result.

While all these perks have made this machine run smoothly, the slow start and closing of the laptop is frustrating, especially since I'm used to the quickness since day one.

Can anyone recommend anything else?

Uninstall Clean My Mac before it renders your system unusable, it really is that bad.

Since you installed that you may have installed other bad software. Consider running EtreCheck http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck and posting it's result here so that we can see what else may be going on.

Hello Mike,

1. I did as you said and removed CleanMyMac. I used it to remove duplicates. I've tried re-installing El Capitan several times as well and no progress.

2. I ran my Mac through Etrecheck and here are the results:

3. I also need help removing all the Blackberry software and Serrato patches I see here. Any recommendations?

Nov 29, 2015 6:32 PM in response to K-A

The Blackberry software is incompatible and is known to cause slowdowns, that might be the major offender. If you don't still have the BB software you may need to download an uninstaller from their site. Here' a Verizon link with info http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-25644/

You should Google for instructions on how to remove the serato thing, I don't recommend downloading any third party software removal apps. Uninstallers from the developers are ok.

Your memory isn't the problem, beginning with Mavericks the OS uses as much memory as it can to make tasks faster, as apps request ram the OS releases it to the app. The hig Used Ram is a good thing, you don't want system resources like ram sitting around not being used when they can be speeding up your Mac.

Nov 30, 2015 9:10 AM in response to K-A

Just to provide an update, I got rid of BB and Serato for the most part. The shut down improved slightly, but start up still takes about 45 seconds (It used to be a third of that time).

Please see an updated report and see if it can help.

Hey Mike,

It used to be pretty fast when it came out the box. It used to be 5-10 sec starts and 4 seconds to shut down. But if this is the norm, I guess I'll live with it. I guess I was spoiled. Ha!

AwesomeGamer, I was hoping it would not come down to "getting a clean slate," but it may be an option.

Thank you both for your advice and expertise.
