how do I delete saved messages

I have iPhone 5s running is 9.1 with 16G memory. I am trying to free up memory and one of the biggest hogs is Messages. I have deleted all my messages and still shows 1G is being used. I used ibackupbot to delete the SMS file attachments but still no luck.

Any other ideas or tricks to try?

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.1

Hello, daved64. I suggest you try Safewiper iOS Data Eraser app, it can completley erase all data from your iPhone, and make them unrecoverable, and free up your space memory. Don't simply delete your text messages, it still be recoverable by some iphone data recovery tool.

This seems a legit solution for data cleanup on iPhone. I tested the trial version and it helped me save 1G storage by deleting caches and game data.
