Activated Pop-up Blocker but am still getting Pop-ups

I have Blocked Pop-ups but continue to get different ads that pop up on different web sites. I have tried unblocking and then checking Block Pop-ups again and still get these annoying ads. I am also getting a lot of notifications that I have a virus with recommendations for downloading anti-virus software.

First, do not install antivirus software on your Mac. What you are seeing is "fake alerts" that are simply aggressive web page scripts that are attempting to panic you and fool you into purchasing a bogus product and revealing your credit card information.

Instead, simply close the web browser, then reopen it and clear the browser's cache. Depending on which browser you are using, you may want to add a browser extension that will better help protect you from aggressive ad networks that are the ultimate enablers of these fake alerts.

What browser are you using?

There are several possibilities to resolve the cause of certain issues.

Prevention usually involves safe-browsing habits and caution.

Good luck! 🙂

You inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.

For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. Apple's instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully. Pay particular attention to the easily overlooked passages directing you to restart your Mac when required.

Review your Gatekeeper settings: OS X : About Gatekeeper - Apple Support. Gatekeeper is designed to help prevent you from inadvertently installing garbage software.
