Q: Macbook Pro 2012 rainbow ball of death every few seconds

Hi, everyone.

I've been experiencing lag issues with my 2012 Macbook Pro 13-inch. I have EI Capitan installed. I'm not sure what the problem is but I have done many things in order to try fixing this. I can post more details if need be but I am currently typing on my macbook which again is incredibly laggy and makes it difficult to type anything.

1) Repaired the disk permissions

2) Checked Activity Monitor and RAM and CPU seem fine (and I see this when no applications are open)

3) Reinstalled El Capitan after erasing

4) Zero applications open except for Safari while I type this

5) Tried to do first aid on Macintosh HD in Disk Utility but the disk is fine

6) Ran Apple Hardware Test and no hardware was found to be problematic

7) Let Spotlight complete indexing but just in case, also stopped it from working just to see if it would help

8) Reset SMC and PRAM

9) I have a backup on my external hard drive

Lag issues (where the rainbow wheel of death pops up and then goes away after 30 seconds or so) still happen even if very very minimal activity is occurring. This lag comes every once in a while, it makes doing anything unbearable. Lag occurs no matter which application I'm using (e.g.. Chrome, Safari, Finder, System Preferences, etc).

I do have a Console log which appeared as I was barely doing anything in Safari, just browsing on one window but it began to lag very badly. I cannot read logs and even if I tried, I can't see what the problem with my laptop is.

My gut feeling is your HDD is failing.  Make sure you have a redundant current back-up plan in place.

Do you have an external boot clone to boot from,  this would confirm or deny it is the internal HD failing.

    hi leroydouglas,

I'm appreciative of the quick response.

Admittedly, I do not know what an external boot clone is, which most likely means I do not have one. Is there a way I can make one and test it out?

I was thinking about upgrading my Mac's HDD to SDD but I am not sure if this would help.

Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper are both the go to software for making a backup onto an external HD, which by definition are bootable.

All HD/SSD will fail in time. You need a contingency  plan.

This is a common backup strategy, along side a TimeMachine backup on a separate external HD. This is a sensible redundant backup plan.

One is bootable ( and swappable ,)   the other is much easier to restore specific files,  folders, images, etc. on demand, as well as your entire system if need be.

If you  are considering a SSD you can buy an external USB enclosure to temporarily house the SSD/HD.  You can clone you internal HD to the SSD.

It is an immediate backup you can boot to an run your machine independent of the internal HD,  or swap it out for the internal HD.  Then the internal HD can be inserted into the enclosure if it is functional.

Look at OWC for DIY kits:  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

Thank you so so much for your help.

I downloaded a trial of CCC and will see if it can boot and function.

I will post again once running through the steps.

As well, thank you for the background information on the enclosure. I have a question however which you may have answered already but I'm not sure: how does one keep using a HDD that's functional in an enclosure?

Posting again after rebooting from the backup volume that contains the CCC.

Blazing fast startup, blazing fast activity, and no rainbow ball of death so far.

I think you're right in saying that the HDD is failing.

However, I do have to say that last night (while still booted on the HDD), the lag was gone. It just wasn't as fast as it is right now in this current boot.

I will weigh my options. Would you have any personal suggestion on what I should do?

You have all the classic symptoms- verified by the performance of the boot clone from an external HD.

Your DiskUtiliuty can show no errors, SMART status can be verified

A failing HD can show periodically  running with no issues, then laborious SBBOD— all these can be misleading and frustrating in trying to trouble shoot a failing HD.

My personal suggestion remains the same, backup, backup, backup and buy a SSD ASAP.

    Fantastic. Thank you so much.

I have just bought an SSD and enclosure. I have one current Time Machine backup in my external hard drive that I would like to use (the other ones are not recent). I have also important files excluding music (sadly) stored up in the same hard drive if all breaks loose.

The steps I'll take is loading that backup tonight,

and then backing up a few times before installing the SSD and 8GB of RAM.

Hope that will cinch the deal.

    hi leroydouglas,

    ive run into a problem...

I Installed the new ssd into my Mac and it doesn't boot - It just shows a gray stop sign.

The SSD does boot when plugged in via enclosure so I thought it might be the SATA cable...

But in Disk Utility, it shows that the disk has a problem and cannot be repaired, and I must delete it saving as much as I can.

What should I do? I don't know which option i ahould take: delete the data on the SSD and reinstall or get a SATA cable.

If it successfully boots in the external enclosure I would run the machine in this way so you are operational.  Also it will verify you are well past the original problem.

Then I would would order a new SATA cable, relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.  You can google for best price etc.

Disadvantageous being in Canada. It's expensive for me to find a SATA cable for cheap.

Thanks for the help; I'll look into it!
