when is a .xls file NOT compatible with Numbers?

I use a bank which produces a .xls file for statements I am currently running OS 10.11.1 and Numbers 3.6.1.

The .xls file passed to numbers looks more like ?Javascript? when shown in Numbers. I have referred this question to the bank concerned but never get a response from them on the issue which makes me wonder WTH!

What is wrong here? (sample below)-

<TR><TD height="19" valign="top">26 Nov 2015</TD><TD> </TD><TD valign="top">ALNMOUTH STN TO 6288</TD><TD> </TD><TD align="right" valign="top">30.00</TD><TD> </TD><TD align="right" valign="top"> </TD><TD> </TD><TD align="right" valign="top">218.29</TD></TR>

For now I just have to copy and paste from the online statements and then produce a .csv file to read into iFinance; it would be preferable to cut out at least one step!

Hope someone can say what's going on!
