when is a .xls file NOT compatible with Numbers?

I use a bank which produces a .xls file for statements I am currently running OS 10.11.1 and Numbers 3.6.1.

The .xls file passed to numbers looks more like ?Javascript? when shown in Numbers. I have referred this question to the bank concerned but never get a response from them on the issue which makes me wonder WTH!

What is wrong here? (sample below)-

For now I just have to copy and paste from the online statements and then produce a .csv file to read into iFinance; it would be preferable to cut out at least one step!

Hope someone can say what's going on!

that is html. try opening the file with a web browser (even try changing the extension from xls to html), then copy and paste the data

Wayne, thank you for clearing that up for me. So, asI suspected it's nut a "true" .xls file so I guess I might just as well carry on cutting and pasting and send a "howler" to the bank about misrepresentation!

Can the bank export as CSV? or what about Quicken exchange?

Numbers '09 will open quicken
