Hi,

On the iPhone ?

Settings > Messages and slide the option for it to be On.

The Number will take a few minutes max to verify.

On the Mac (you list both but don't specify) ?

One the app. It should ask you to enter an Apple ID on first run but there should also be an option to skip that part.

If you are past this then open the app then select the Preference > Accounts and enter an Apple ID in the iMessages Account along with it's password.

As you talk about Messages you have upgraded from the OS X 1.7.5 that you list which would be iChat 6.x.x which does not have iMessages.

The iPhone 4s also cannot run the latest iOS software to run the latest features in iMessages.

It would be useful if you updated this in your profile here. For further posts in this thread you will have to add it manually.
